At Studio Blu Photography, our goal is to produce clean, natural photographs of our subjects. We want to give you portraits that exemplify and embrace who you are. We work hard to put our subjects in lighting and background situations that best suit their personalities, clothing and tone. We want to laugh with you. We want you to have an experience that you enjoy and have photographs that you love.

Senior Portraits Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Studio Blu was commissioned by Koch Hazard Architects to provide them with a portfolio of commercial portraits for them to use as a custom stock photo catalog. The idea is we come in and document the people, places or things that illustrate who you are. Then you have a series of images that can be used in house and/or for marketing. We have had the opportunity to shoot a ton of different projects for their team. It is always cool to hang out with people who specialize in designing the spaces our lives are lived in! Koch Hazard are a powerhouse locally when it comes to clean, modern architecture that ties in with the traditional aesthetics of the region. They incorporate wood, stone and metal into industrial, commercial, educational and residential spaces. Their projects stand out for their quality and aesthetics both.
Chaz’s Family land near Newton Hills was the perfect backdrop for this engagement session. Nothing like wandering a forest to find the perfect photo spots.

The object is to show evidence of the relationship. That two become one. There is adventure in finding that note.
When the trees have lost all of their leaves, the forest sounds are crisp and strong. The evidence of seasonal cycles cover the forest floor, protecting it from the ravages of winter, while simultaneously providing life and nutrients for the coming spring. Underneath the leaves, the mice scurry and the insects crawl. Making last minute preparations for the coming reality.
As we meander through the towering timber, we ever so slightly stir the balance. We are but momentary visitors in this sea of seasonal decay. Color amidst the grey.

This summer I spent a few days hanging out with Laura and Tove from Rug and Relic. I fall in love with every single thing they import from Istanbul. Steve and Tove have become great friends over the last 5 years. If you are in need of a unique piece to fit in your space, I guarantee they will have 100 things that will belong in your home. These homes have a mix of the antiquities, hand made rugs and artwork that really make their store stand out.
Rugs imported from Turkey lay the groundwork for the mood of these spaces. This really is their specialty. They travel several times a year to hand pick the rugs that they bring home. Some are antique, some are made to order. You will not find many people in the country who better understand handmade rugs than Steve, Tove and their staff.
After that it is easy to focus on the relics that give them the second half of their name. From ancient pottery and hand tools from Turkey, to antique mining casting dyes from The Homestake Mine. Such an eclectic variety of decor that you literally cannot find anywhere else.
Last, but definitely not least, their fine art adorning the walls of these spaces. They have two of our favorite artists represented in the store. Local artist Laura Jewell’s work has the qualities of landscape with hints of surrealism and abstraction. The way her imagery flows onto the surface is both warm and super modern. Artwork for any space. Des Moines artist Chris Vance is a little more pop culture, skateboard influenced artwork. He is an extremely proficient artist with a constantly flowing set of imagery going through the store. You have to have a collection of Vance’s work, because after one piece, your walls will beckon for more…
Steve Bormes sculptural work is whimsical and awe inspiring. I have a previous blog dedicated specifically to his work. But you most definitely should head back and take a look at those pieces.
The best way to really get a handle on what they are up to, is to visit them in person. Have Steve show you his workshop and Paul Bunyon’s tool belt. Ask him to tell you the story of the purple cast, and tell him them sent you.

What can we say, besides we had a blast photographing Morgan! She is so smart, unusual and fun! We strive to create natural, unique and personal senior portraits, that express who you are as a human. We are now booking seniors for the class of 2018!
Our background is in Fine Art photography. We like that to inform our senior portraits. We like to use light and composition to really show your personality.
Our senior portraits are pretty straight forward. You bring in up to 5 out fits, we hang out and take photos for roughly two hours. Usually that means that we take between six hundred and a thousand photographs. I cull through the images and present you with one hundred to one hundred and fifty images. The session itself is two hundred dollars. You can purchase the images on disk for five hundred dollars. We used to offer packages and such, however we have always felt more comfortable with a model that allows you access to all of those edited images to use at your own discretion. Please do not hesitate to call or email us with questions.
This is our homegirl Kelly Sullivan. She is, generally speaking one badass chica. Some adjectives that come to mind when thinking of Kelly, assertive, confident, smart, proactive, civic minded, and hella good at Rap Karaoke! Kelly came to me for some casual business portraits as she enters the world of real estate. We are pretty sure that she is going to take over this city. Starting with the women’s march she organized today January 21st, 2017. Kicking off a non-partisan celebration of women’s power in our state. Thanks for helping to create a place that will foster the potential of our daughter and all future women.
Kelly, please, please, please; keep kicking ass!
Andrew, Mikayla and their daughter drove down to Sioux Falls from Brookings for their engagement photography session. Getting to know their history was a great part of the process. We laughed a lot.

Baron Wolfgang is an accomplished interior designer at Montgomerys Furniture. From modern and cool to cozy and comfortable, he will make your space breath. He came in for some professional portraits. One of the most down to earth and lovable dudes ever. Pay him to make your home beautiful for you. You will not regret it!
Baron is a good friend of ours. He is an old soul with patience and perspective. Wise beyond his years. When not working we usually find Baron hanging out at M.B.Haskett’s restaurant downtown. He is a board member for the Center for Equality as well. Always fashionable and inspiring. We love and respect Baron.

Wedding Photography was a blast with this little family. Studio Blu has a sweet spot for little families! Watching Makayla and Andrew with there daughter is magical. They are funny and fun together. She clearly lights up their life!
Photographing this wedding was so much fun. The common thread that Andrew and I have. The closeness we felt to our fathers. The laughing in the car. I don’t remember ever crying from laughter while photographing a wedding before.
Andrew decided that Tory and I need a reality TV show… Kind of a genius idea. Makayla clearly is used to laughing out loud. So much damn fun with you guys. Can we do it again?
We started out in their beautiful home in Brookings, on what turned out to be the perfect day. MaKayla and her girls were getting ready throughout the house. We laughed with them as we prepared for the first look. For a really personal first look we photographed just in front of their home. With Andrew waiting outside, MaKayla stepped out the front door to meet him under the cover of their shade tree. After a personal moment we proceeded to photograph the two of them, and their daughter in front of the cottage that they live in. It was meant to be photographed.
After that, the four of us hopped in the car and journeyed to several non traditional spots for more modern wedding photography locations. An industrial building, an old storage shed and some other fantastic backgrounds. Then we headed to an architecturally stunning church where they were to be married. After a beautiful ceremony we headed downtown for some drinks and then they made their entrance to the reception venue just a few miles south of town. The reception was put together by Makayla’s aunt, and was well thought out and beautiful. Under what has to have been the largest tent I have ever seen, the guests congregated and dined. Immediately following the dinner, everyone was invited up to the second floor of the barn to a stunning venue for a dance. Everyone was taken aback by the space. It was one of the best adventures of 2016 for us!

Tori and Tucker have a special place in our hearts. They have an energy about them that I just can’t put my finger on. They have great taste in music and a passion for each other (Mainly because we grew up listening to the same music). We had a blast hanging with them.
This blog post might be a little long, but we loved so many of the images from their wedding that a short blog post just wouldn’t do. You can file this one under: Kick Ass Weddings.
Tori and Tucker both got ready at Blue Haven Barn. It was super convenient to have the two of them under the same roof to start the day. One of the many smart details at this new venue. Our friend Angelique Verver of Platinum Imagination took care of Tori’s hair and make-up, and nailed it!
We had the first look just out the back door of the venue, and even though the day was super windy we had several choices of great spots to take photographs right on the property. After that we headed down to one of our favorite churches to photograph at, St. Mary’s. Photogenic inside and out, we got some amazing captures around the building. We were fortunate to have great light everywhere we went. Tori was stunning in her dress and Tucker’s “Hand of the King” Tie Tack was a super cool detail that made perfect sense to me. Their crew was also on point. Not just their wedding party, but Tucker’s sister had our back all day!
Tori, Tucker, Thanks for letting us hang.
At Studio Blu Photography we focus on making clean, modern and natural fine art photographs of your wedding day. We obsess over details. Our job is to make your day go as smoothly as possible while capturing timeless images.
